Back in India

My last session in North Carolina had some really good waves.  However the air temp was 26 F (minus 3 C), the water was 44 F (7 C), and I was wearing a 5-year-old, porous 4/3.  I surfed some little waves here in India, yesterday.  The air temp jumped up 60 degrees from my last session, and the water went up about 40 into the 80s.  I've never done consecutive sessions anywhere close to that.  I love the whole cold water thing and even missed it my 3 winters away, but I'll admit that the tropical water feels pretty nice.

Some Pre-Monsoon Kovalam

Kovalam often shines best when conditions deteriorate.  The cross-swell and onshores that ruin everywhere else tend to do it well here.  One more week or so until Monsoon.  Then, it will pretty much be over until late August. 

 

Obstacle Coarse

Sometimes surfing is just too easy.  If you find that to be the case, just add a heinous rip current, an ankle-deep end section, and some fishing nets.  Then, your head high peaks will offer all the challenge you need.

OK Swell...Good Sand

They say there's nothing more crushing to your surfing self image than watching yourself on video.  I agree but would add that watching yourself on video the week you've been watching the Quik Pro is even worse.  It's a good thing the purpose of this blog is to showcase Kerala waves and not an overweight 40-year-old's surfing skills...or lack thereof. 

 

We had a fun crew for these 2 days.  It would be difficult to find a more even distribution of our planet in 5 random people - America, India, Japan, France, and South Africa (behind the camera).

 

I guess the video was too much to load even on the lowest quality, so I divided it in two.  It still wouldn't upload, so I thirded it.  Good enough.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Another Never Surfed Indian Wave

This is filmed from 450 ft. up and far away.  It's hard to tell in the distance, but it's solid overhead...at least.   Magic Seaweed was giving it 3ft @ 12 seconds on this day.
